NC Primary Watch: African-American vote surges
* African-American voters have registered in record numbers in North Carolina -- 45,000 in the first three months of 2008, compared with just over 11,000 in the same period four years ago.
* The Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies notes today that, while African-Americans make up 22% of the state population, they have made up nearly 40% of early voters in 2008. Here's the demographic breakdown of early voting as of this morning
Men 38.7%
Women 60.8%
White 56.5%
Black 39.9%
White Women 33.2%
White Men 23.1%
Democrat 84.1%
Unaffiliated 15.8%
* Peter St. Onge of The Charlotte Observer suggests that if 35% of Democratic primary voters today are African-American, Obama will score a victory of over 5%. Less than that, "Clinton will be celebrating."

I realise that this may sound a dumb question, but how do people know the racial profile of voters?
They figure it out by exit polls.
Also, nearly all voters have their race on record with the Board of Elections as part of their personal info in the voter database (providing your race is voluntary, but almost everyone provides it). So after election day, when the BOE's run the records and marks down who voted, they can tabulate the race totals based on most voters.
They can't tell who each person voted for, obviously, those are estimates that have to be done using exit polls.
Obama’s Race Against Race
By Nicolas Powers
From the April 25, 2008 issue
A black man runs from a howling crowd. If he’s caught he’ll be torn apart. If he reaches sanctuary he’ll be loved. This ritual is the Sacred Lynching. It’s a scene from Olaf Stapledon’s science fiction book, The First and Last Men. Set in the future, humanity has mixed and few people are “white” or “black,” and the ritual is a nostalgic celebration of racism in a post-racial world. It resembles our own supposed post-racial politics, and I see Senator Barack Obama as that last black man on earth trying to outrun our media mob.
