Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls on Women's Voices to denounce North Carolina robo-calls
In the wake of national controversy surrounding Facing South's investigation into the use of illegal and deceptive robo-calls in North Carolina by Women's Voices Women Vote, actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- who had appeared in a Public Service Announcement for the group -- issued a widely-circulated statement this weekend clarifying her role with the group. In the statement, Louis-Dreyfus states:
The news reports [of Louis-Dreyfus' involvement] came about because there was evidence that an individual or a small group of individuals affiliated with WVWV may have issued misleading robo-calls in North Carolina designed to suppress voter turnout in African American neighborhoods. I find these activities appalling and hope WVWV will immediately disassociate themselves from such individuals and denounce such actions.Louis-Dreyfus also stated that "I am not affiliated with WVWV in any way other than participating in this PSA campaign," and noted that she is "proudly supporting" Sen. Barack Obama for president.

Please explain to me how WVWV can denounce the source of the robo calls, which is themselves?
There has been so much butt covering and wagon circling here that its absolutely disgusting.
Some national e-voting activists refuse to report this because some of their base, possibly their donors - support the politicians close to this mess.
Frankly, if WVWV's board was stacked with republicans affiliated with a former GOP president, and with a current GOP presidential candidate, the howls on the internet would blow up the speakers on your computer.
Hipocrisy is the name of the game here, meanwhile low information African American voters are "thrown under the bus" after so many years of being "on the back of the bus".
I applaud Facing South and The Institute for Southern Studies for being honest in investigating the harmful actions of WVWV.
Don't forget Democracy North Carolina's role in stopping WVWV as well -- while others look for some political connection, they are concentrating on stopping these people from continuing their idiocy. Gotta admire them for having their priorities straight.
Go Julia L-D!
I'm with you on the hypocrisy, Joyce -- we can't look the other way when people break the law just because they are "on our side". That's how we ALL get in trouble.
A Durham voter got another odd robocall about voting.

WVWV's letter to the North Carolina Board of Elections finally arrived on Friday, May 2 - over a week after they claimed to have mailed it.
Problem? It was postmarked on Wednesday, April 30.
They lied about having sent it on April 24. What else are they lying about?
There are a lot of other famous people involved. Do you think that they all were out to surpress the vote?

Great PSA add including:
Felicity Huffman likes “to do it in the morning, when I’m fresh.”
“It’s kind of personal!” protests Angie Harmon, when asked to talk about her first time, but eventually she opened up and said she did “a lot of research on positions that I liked.”
Daphne Zuniga once did it in an old woman’s garage.
This from the NYT.

New diary at Dailykos documents the letter arriving late, screen shots of the WVWV web site changes May2 to May 5 which are troubling changes.

"Then, last night, when writing my Kos diary about the NC press release and a bizarre planted article in the Craig, Colorado newspaper, I noticed that their press release website had changed. They added the press release this weekend, put a date on it, and put it in chronological order below their statement of support by William McNary, in order to make it look like it had been been there all week.
Fortunately, I have as proof a screen capture of their Press Release page as of Friday, May 2:"

Jesus, Shaun, answer my question! Why are you spending all this time online defending an organization that engages in activities that you have DEVOTED YOUR LIFE TO STOPPING???
Your Daphne Zuniga dodge is scurrilous. Nobody claims that Zuniga could have had any knowledge of voter suppression or confusion activity.
More to the point, as the post immediately following this one demonstrates, the ISS has made no claims as to the motivation of WVWV, only the extremely lousy execution. Why don't you focus on that and stop trying to change the subject?
