The case of the Jena 6

Facing South was one of the first media outlets to cover the case of the Jena 6 -- black youths in rural Louisiana who are facing up to 22 years in prison (thanks to an all-white jury) after getting in a schoolyard fight with white students.

This week, ColorOfChange gives us an update on the status of the case and their national campaign:
Last Tuesday, over 300 people from across the country descended on Jena: we rallied in front of the courthouse, marched through downtown Jena, and cut through a line of sheriffs to hand-deliver petitions from more than 43,000 ColorOfChange.org members to the District Attorney's office.

It was quite a moment. The families were beaming because they knew that we had their backs. And, from the looks on their faces, it was clear that the authorities hadn't anticipated such a growing and powerful force. We've also gotten the attention of Governor Blanco, who finally started sending responses to the over 50,000 emails ColorOfChange.org members sent to her office. And, together, we've raised more than $55,000 for the legal defense of the Jena 6.
But the youths haven't received justice yet. To lend your voice to the campaign, visit here. For more background on the case, listen to NPR's story or read this account from the BBC.

I have recently read about the case in JET Magazine. It saddens me yet it does not surprise me that these types of things are STILL going on today. I find it hard to believe that some of the White youths brought guns to the school and nothing really occurred. Based on Columbine and all of the other school shootings shouldn't there have been more than just a FINE! Also why haven't we heard more about this on the television news. How come Oprah hasn't done a show based on what is going on in Jena, why aren't we hearing about it on BET. This is the time when we should support our boys and make sure that justice is served.

If people want Oprah (and others) to help publize this, she has an online form you can use to send her the message that you want a story on it.

I heard about this on Oprah and Friends on XM Radio, Gayle King mentioned that this was going on, I watch CNN religiously yet have heard nothing on this. I'm amazed that here we are in 2007 and this type of discrimination is still going on!

I just heard about this from a college peer. I am passing this on through myspace. Hopefully, we can get the word out. I am horrified that this has happened to these young men. Living in NC I am horrified that the Duke LaCross case (also a travesity of justice) received nightly air time and I had not heard the story of these young men.
The DA needs to be in jail. The school superintendant in the next cell. Both of these men have violated the civil rights of everyone of colored skin involved in this case. I will say a prayer and spread the word.

I am an African American high school student in Baton Rouge, La. I am soo upset behind the Jena 6 case. This stuff needs to stop. It was just a school fight. Thats why schools have rights and responsibility handbooks so situations such as this don't get out of hand!. I just don't understand. Its okay when one black person kills another, however; when the roles are reversed society is ready to take away the life of a black male. Its just not right. I am also upset because I just found out about this case!! But I shouldn't be shocked because most of the media aim to put blacks down!..To the boys I am praying for you..! & don't worry God said through him all things shall come to pass..This is all apart of his plan!..Justice Will Be Served!

I heard about the Jena 6 on the Steve Harvey morning show, and I almost cried when I heard what happened. I am a 24 y/o blk fml who is in college, and I can't imagine my future being snatched from me simply because I am afro-american. It's already hard enough for blacks in this country...especially young blacks. It doesn't surprise me however because this country was founded on inequality, and Unfortunatley we have not been able to experience any leadership that has been able to change the sad state of affairs in America. When we did, they were killed and blacks were once again left to fend in a white man's world. The Jena 6 is in need of as much support as possible, and I support them 100%, and with all my heart. Please keep your heads up young brothers; know God sees your struggle, and he will heal your hearts.

Here's the thing my dear black people, I hear alot of us talkng. but that's all we are doing is just talking. not all of us but, most of our community is full of talkers and not enough doers.i work as a fundraiser for non profit orginisations, and i call for the NAACP alot of the time and 90% of the people i call are our people. and these are the types things i hear all the time from our people. most will talk about the issues and express outrage but when i ask for a donation all i hear is "oh I cant right now" or i'm sick" or "oh not today" or "i already did" "or i'm busy" it's really frustrating. then i'm forced to ask my self well are we really just lazy and want some body else to do something about our problems. i know what the underlying problem is though and most of you will not agree with this but here goes, 95% percent of black believes in religion most believe in christianity, religion, i hate to break it to most of you, is used as a form of control as long as you are waiting on some one to save you you cant save yourselves.

I have not heard anything about this case until this morning on the Russ Parr morning show. It really sickens me to know that racism and racial profiling still exist after all these years. And this case is clearly an act of racism. I too am of African American decent with a 5 year old male child. And to hear things like this really frightens me to know that my child could someday endure such unjust behavior due to the color of his skin for trying to defend himself. My heart really goes out to the young men and their families of Jena 6. I will truly say a prayer for these young men as well as enlighten everyone I know around me about this story. I pray that GOD will make sure that JUSTICE is served! Through GOD all things are possbile!

I am a 41 year old bf with a 6year old son. It saddens me that this not talked about in the media. I live in Faytteville NC and all I heard last year was about the "Duke Boys" and what Nifong did. Surely this should get some air play. If it was not for Micheal Biasden, I would have never had heard about it. I watch the news daily and listen to CNN,Headlines news, internet and have not seen anything except when i search for the Jena 6 information. It's funny they would have something on Yahoo about the baggy pants hanging but nothing about the Jena 6. Black people we need to wake up, racisim is alive and well. This happen in Louisanna, surely this kind of thing can happen all over the US. What's up with the rappers that live down south, how come not bringing notice to this. The only one that I heard mention anything was David Banner, kudos! What about Oprah, how come she is not having Town Hall meeting on this? Pissed off and tired of being tired.

All I can say is that it's awful that we are just hearing about this. I think it happen this way because the law enforcers waited until almost a year has pass before really saying anything about the student being in jail. They probably figure that since one of the students is in jail that nothing would come about it, but wrong. Something has to be done and everyone is always wondering why our black youth cannot achieve anything. It's always something that's keeping them behind.

Yes it's such ashame what is happening to those young men in Jena, but the truth is my fellow black people...we won't do anything about it. We never do. And you idiots keep relying on the NAACP, but you still don't realize that behind the scenes they are puppets on strings as well. White's with money control their leaders. Al Sharpton, Oprah, I could go on, they are paid to say and do juuust enough to keep us nappy heads complacent and feeling "in power". I will say that until black people stop focusing on their bling-bling and weaves and start controlling their money i.e. black owned import and export, and black owned manufacturing and not just selling; also when blacks stop ignoring what's going on in Africa and claim a Country for our selves "Kujichagulia", we will continue to be the clowns of the world and not taken as a serious force of power. By the way, Jesus is real. And the power of the Word is irrefutable. Why do you think every other second Jesus' name is mentioned in mockery on the TV. Because exactly what the bible says is happening right now.

Lets get one thing straight these 6 kids are not innocent, they viciously attacked a boy while he was not looking then stomped his head while he was already not moving. Also why is there no talk of Mychal Bell's previous criminal record? which includes 4 violent crimes, so he is not some innocent kid caught up in the situation he is a repeated offender of violent crimes. Sorry black people 3 strikes and ur out. Hes actually lucky he got an extra strike. Yeah i agree 25 to life is a little too extreme for attempting and almost succeeding in killing a kid, 10-15 yrs would be a more just punishment. However we should stick by our justice system and rally for justice to be served for this kid that is very lucky to be alive today.

Everyone is complaining about how we need to help these poor boys. I agree that the punishment is excessive, but they do need to be punished. Right along with the boys that beat the black student and the one the pulled a gun on the young black males. But come on people, stop playing the race card. In order to stop racial profiling, you have to stop fitting the profile. Look at the numbers. U.S. Population by Race: White - 69.13%, Black - 12.32%, Hispanic - 12.55% and other - 6%. State and Federal Inmates by Race
White - 34.72%, Black - 43.91%, Hispanic - 18.26 and other 3.11%. (http://www.hrw.org/backgrounder/usa/incarceration/) There is a lot more information that you bloggers should read. If you want to defend the black race, make sure they are worthy of your defense. When you look at these tell me why we should stop racial profiling? You are making the name for yourself. It is not to say that you can't go out there and better yourselves, you just choose not to. I know that there are productive members of our society that are black, and have many friends that are such. They agree that most of the black community is a disgrace. Most of the racial tension in this country is self inflicted. If you carry yourself with the stereotype of your race, you will be treated like that stereotype. However, if you carry yourself as a respective member of society, you again will be treated as such. For those that do not treat you in the manner you wish, why waste your energy worrying about what they think. Do what is best for you and move on.

One more thing. I feel the same way about the white trash in our country. I am not going to feel sorry for anyone that is going to be nothing to our society rather than a burden.

I heard about the Jena 6 from a very good friend of mine who is actually oneof the attorneys for one of the young men. Initially I felt bad about it because I did not even know this happened until he told me, but this incident occured between September - December 2006. Now I'm mad as all hell to think that these young black men who want to make something of themselves, had plans to attend college and furhter their educations and achieve their goals, can have it all snatched away in hours. I've become very active in the trying to do what I can to help in anyway with my friends and family. To believe the things my father and grandfathers went through growing up in the south over 50 years ago is still happening today in 2007 is ridiculous.

As for all the facts involved yes there is and was hardcore racism going on down south. As for the youths who beat the white student and proceeded to do so after he was knocked out, assuming they were the guilty ones to begin with, deserve to go to jail. They broke the law plain and simple. A school yard fight is one thing but to continue to beat the kid while knocked is criminal. As for the white students who hung the nooses, the ones who beat the black student at a party and the kid with the gun should all be facing time as well. Its called fairness and justice. Justice is being served just not fairly. Now if it was a black student who was beat by 6 white guys you all would be screaming for the death penalty. And that is the truth.

People need to wake up and realize that our country is a sick, sad and horrible place. To our "black" people, would you be so outraged if those 6 black students were white? And to the highly offended, why are you so offended? If your brother was viciously beaten, would you be so quick to become "offended". Granted there is injustice in the world and something needs to be done about it, but the next time us "blacks" see a knappy headed hoe walking down the street and you begin to comment, just think the same comment that Don Imus so outrageously made, you just made it about your OWN people. And of course I'm not justifying what he said, but Now who's the "racist"? Stop allowing our culture to be antagonized by becoming educated and stop portraying ourselves so horribly in the media.Don't do the very thing we hate to ourselves. Were quick to complain about the criticism and stereotypes AND INJUSTICE so heres a lttle advice STOP GIVING PEOPLE THINGS TO CRITIZE. AND to our BLACK WOMEN, if you like being igorant and ghetto, more power to you, for we might have come from the same place, but we will remain far from eual.I'm a well educated, independent woman, and i can give a damn about how people view women of my culture! Why? because those stereotypes are not about me, to me and they dont offend me. To our black men, maybe if you gave these young men a great male to look up to, maybe this would have never occured. Stay out of the streets and raise the very thing you help create. Maybe if these boys were at home studying for a fianl, instead of beating the shit out a kid, they wouldn't be in such a predicament. WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE. YES THNGS IN JENA LOUISANNA NEED TO BE CHANGED, HELL THINGS IN CHICAGO ILLINOIS NEED TO BE CHANGED, HOW ABOUT WE HELP CHANGE THEM, INSTEAD OF HELPING CREATE MORE PROBLEMS. I PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE OF JENA LOUISANNA AND THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLDE.\!!!!

I have been hearing about this case on several R&B radio stations in Atlanta GA and through e-mails sent by my e-mail buddies. I'm just really astounded that this type of madness is going on still in the world today. I have read several messages on this message board and they don't surprise me, however, these boards can be really insensitive. I understand that these young men are not innocent and maybe it should have been handled in a different manner. However, I don't believe the kid that was beaten was innocent either and I'm really sorry it even escalated to that level. In the case of the white boys who beat up a black boy; were they innocent? I think not, but they only received a warning, where is the fairness? How about the white boy who pulled a gun on a black boy in school; was he innocent too? I don't think so, that could have been a fatal shooting, where I'm from(MIAMI, FL)if a person pulls a gun on you they intend to kill you; luckily that didn't happen, right? What did he get? mmmm let's see, oh yeah a warning and he wasn't even espelled from school. I'm not finished, what about the noose the white kids hung from a tree,oh and by the way it's been cut down; Why cut it now? So when you all say, "someone is always pulling the race card or crying racism," explain to me, so that I can get a clear understanding what it is. No one is condoning violence, no one is saying that these boys are innocent, we just believe the punishment is too harsh, and if you are going to punish these black young men, then the same should apply to the young white men, no one should be exempt, if you don't see this as racism thenI feel sorry for you. I have seen too many of our black youths get sent to prison for a length of time, taking away their lives. For instance,In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one(Shaquanda Cotton) shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The state NAACP calls it 'a signal to black folks.' WAKE UP PEOPLE!

I sincerely pray that Our Father in Heaven renders merciful justice for these young men. This case is extremely disturbing, however, useful in that the experience is a dose of reality to all people of color that racism is alive and well in America and througout the world. As a woman of God, I hear the Lord saying, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, I will hear them and heal thier land. People of God, fast, pray, and take action as led by the Holy Spirit.

It is a disgrace that this is happening in the 21st century to these young afro american males with promising futures. I'm outraged to hear about this, but if the roles were reversed the white children would probably be reprimanded verbally and told not to do that again. We would not have even known about the incident. But the school administers can down play the nooses hanging from the tree "Oh no one meant anything by those nooses". My question is Who made the decision to cut the tree down? That's right get rid of the evidence so afro americans can stop talking about the nooses. First of all, we need to get the attention of the school board administators and see how many afro americans sit on the board. Secondly, we need to ask the court were there not any afro american people intelligent enough to qualify as a juror. Third, we as afro americans need to protest this, because this is just out right injustice to these young men. I personally am aware of the prejudices that is still occuring in Louisiana. It is my responsibility as an afro american to STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING. The anything has to come to an end. Enough is enough. I have to say this the afro americans in Jena are afraid to speak out about what happens in their town everyday, because they are feaful of the consequences later, but they need to wake up this is a new day.

As-Salaam Alaikum,

The Jena 6 case saddens my heart because here we are in 2007 and yet we are still faced with the same racism that we were faced with 400 years ago. However, there have been countless leaders warning us to come away from the slavemaster and his children or we may suffer the consequences. Maybe it is time to start listening to that little man from Georgia The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his student, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. They have both warned us as to what is to come. If you think that Jena 6 is an outrage (which it is) the worst is yet to come. Oh and as far as Oprah dealing with this issue yeah right!!!! Maybe if it would have happened in Africa she would be concerned!!!!

If it is true that there are no laws under which the kids who hung the nooses can be prosecuted, then there needs to be several. Write to the lawmakers and change it.

The DA needs to be disbarred.

The school district needs a better anti-discimination policy. Maybe the entire school board needs to go.

Finally, the Jena 6 are not innocent. They need punished (or helped) so they see that assualt is not the way to make a point. The DA was too harsh: he really needs to go.

Finally, are there other things that can be done in the community to give other children of color hope for their future? Would mentoring programs, a new community center, scholarships, or anything similiar help? After the local government allowed the DA to go off and do his own racist thing, paying to help the youth in the city is the least they can do. The way things stand, how many black youth are feeling undervalued? That needs to change, too.

The facts of this case appear to be or are presented in a way that definitely makes it seem that punishment was levied unfairly. The students who hung the nooses should have been expelled from school and charged with making threats. From my point of view it is no different than making a death threat. Kids who do that in schools these days are arrested and charged with a crime. The black kids who attacked the white kid should be also punished. Perhaps at this point the trial should be held elsewhere. Our sick country has institutionalized racism, thats a sad fact. That said, I believe that if the black community put as much effort into fixing the problems within their community as they are into protesting this case, real change is possible. However, the white community has big problems as well. So many in fact that it wouldn't fit into this little blog.

Why is it we are the only people that can be seperated so easily, why is it so easy for us to kill our own brothers.Brother KING,MALCOLM X

I have just recently read the updated news about the Jena 6 on CNN.com. I don't think that Micheal Bell should've been found guilty. I think that both the white and black guys should get punished, but it shouldn't be a racial controversy. The town is not segregated and for it to be that way, then something is terribly wrong. There also should be black people on jury, instead of all white. It's not fair to the community and to the parents, and the ones who are protesting against this. The white guys also should've gotten more punishment, besides 3 days suspension. The white kids should've gotten expelled because that's not a prank, that is a federal crime. That is like someone putting a cross in someone's yard and burning it. That would be a federal crime. Hanging nooses is such a racist and immature thing to do. It's also a public school and having to ask the principal for permission to sit under a tree, is pitiful!!!!! The school has a lot to do with this, for not expelling the white kids for hanging the nooses in the first place. I am an Asian/American student in high school and I think that no matter what the race is, we all should be treated equally! The black guys have recieved their punishment long enough, the white guys deserve more than just a 3-day suspension from school! Either way, the white and the black guys deserve punishment. They are just some high school kids fighting like no other. Putting the white guy in the hospital was a pretty bad thing, but he already has enough punishment. Michael Bell should not have been found guilty for as long as they want him in, it should just be an easy case to get over and move on with their lives. Hopefully, the boys have learned their lessons, and something like this will not happen again. We need to start having prayer in school, because you just never know, something like this could easily happen at any high school. Everyone involved in the Jena 6 will be in my prayers and I wish the best of luck for all of you and hope and pray to God, that you will make it through this tough time.

We need to do something about this. There is a difference between violence and nonviolence. This racism fits in both categories. I hate it! God created us to be treated equally. This is not what's going on. You will always face some type of racism, somwhere. It's just something that has been going on for years now. There shouldn't be an all white jury, personally becuase it's not giving any black people a chance to speak out and express their feelings or opinions. We need to take a stand and speak out, and honestly more people should be involved, than now! DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS INCIDENT! Prayer, Prayer, Prayer, is all that it is going to take. Michael shouldn't have been thrown in jail like he did. BE STRONG!!!!!!!!

I RECENTLY HEARD ABOUT THIS CASE FROM SEVERAL FRIENDS THAT I WORK WITH.

HOW CAN RACISM PREVAIL IN TODAYS SOCIETY. IT FEELS LIKE THE 60'S ALL OVER AGAIN. WHY DO WE JUDGE OTHER'S BY THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN. WHAT IS OUR WORLD COMING TOO.

OUR FOREFATHERS FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE FOR ALL US CITIZENS. AREN'T ALL US CITIZENS EQUAL AND HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS, I GUESS NOT ACCORDING TO OUR CRIMAINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. IS THEIR NO LAWS ON THE BOOKS CONCERING RACISM.

THIS CASE REMINDS ME OF THE DUKE LACROSS PLAYERS. THE DA IN DURHAM COUNTY WAS RELEIVED OF HIS DUTIES DUE TO HIS RACIST BELEIFS. I FEEL THAT THE DA IN JENA LOUISIANA SHOULD BE RELEIVED OF HIS OR HER DUTIES AND BE PROSECUTED FOR MISHANDLING THIS CASE. THEIR IS NO REASON THESE 6 MEN SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR THIS CRIME

PLEASE STAND WITH ME. WRITE TO YOUR CONGRESSMEN AND EVEN THE PRESIDENT. RACISM STOPS TODAY!!!!!!

there shouldn't be an all white jury- and there definetly shouldn't be a half white and half black jury either what about hispanics? i'm white and i believe like say the police force when we iniciate equality program it shouldn't mean oh there's only 20% blacks it should be based on the ratio of blacks to whites in the population if there 69% whites to 12% blacks they should equate that in the quota- just as a fair measure which people seem to forget and i was against the jena 6 as i heard the white kid was killed and yall were protesting HA that didn't surprise me but if he's just criticaly injured send them to prison for a 6 on 1 beating as a lesson but 22 years is fucked- peace

I'm a white 35 year old female that grew up in a small town in Mississippi. I find this situation to be completely embarrassing to the white race. I live near Ft. Lauderdale FL and I love it because you don't see rasism the way you see in the Deep South. All my family still lives there and swears things are better but I know different. They just don't see anything but that so it just becomes part of thier life. That's wrong, we do have to change things. Rasism has to stop!!!!
