Don't miss the Institute on "The State of Things"
We had a spirited discussion today on "The State of Things," North Carolina Public Radio's popular public affairs show, about military business in North Carolina.
Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue -- who recently launched the North Carolina Military Foundation -- started off with an interview where she extolled the benefits of luring more defense dollars to North Carolina (even saying she didn't see "any" downsides or social costs to it).
Then we moved to a vibrant back and forth between myself, talking about the Institute's recent report "North Carolina at War" -- and Scott Dorney of the N.C. Military Business Center. Military contractors and those critical of the military's role in our state all called in for a feisty conversation.

I heard part of the show, and Chris' extensive use of facts, statistics, sheer reason and open-minded inquiry all served to highlight, to an extend not often seen, the emptiness of the other guests' tub-thumping assertion, burdened as they were by ties to the somewhat perverse corporate interests they are beholdened to.
We need much more of this in the media, so the public can exercise its reason based on facts, not propaganda.
