More revelations on Duke lacrosse accuser's fragile mental state
A profile of the woman published in today's Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer shows the situation was even worse than we realized:
In recent years she turned to therapists for help with bipolar disorder and other mental problems and took anti-psychotic medication.Let us repeat: The three exonerated players were not the only victims of Nifong's malfeasance and incompetence. So was a sexually traumatized and psychologically fragile woman, who now faces the additional horror of having her face printed on the cover of a tabloid newspaper next to the screaming headline, "THE DUKE LIAR."
...
Her emotional problems surfaced as a teenager.
She was 14 when she took up with a man twice her age. Three years after that, in 1996, she told police that the boyfriend had "shared" her sexually with three friends in a trailer home on a country road in Creedmoor. She filed a police report but never provided a written account of what happened, as an officer had requested, and the case was not pursued.
Still, she wrote about the incident in her diary, according to a boyfriend who told police he came across the entry in 2000.
Her parents say the assault left her depressed and that she saw a therapist for a year after and took prescription medicine.
The ugliness that is this case just drags on.
Oh, and by the way: Nifong says he's sorry about the whole thing.

Excellent looks like all the liars are being exposed for the frauds they are.
The Accuser in this case was an opportunist not a victim of any sort. Now she and Mike Nifong are each paying the price for their wickedness.
If you believe the accuser should be excused for her crimes then we are all of us at risk for these random accusations from "crazy" people at all times. I just can't accept that that is okay. She is nothing more than a commom criminal that has been caught...again!!! She is nothing more than a drunk & liar with a criminal record a mile long.
I don't feel sorry for destructive lying opportunistic false accusers who are also prostitutes with criminal records for assaulting police officers while drunk.
If she was deserving of sympathy then she would be in a mental hospital which she was not an is not, therefore spare me your tears.
People like Mike Nifong and his accomplice the FALSE accuser need to be rotting in JAIL!!!
Nifong began that "apology" with self-serving, self-righteous statements. He asks us to remember that HE was the one who handed the case to Cooper (although he doesn't tell us why that was necessary). One could easily believe from his press release on county letterhead again, that he was the "hero" in all of this. Afterall, he "didn't have to turn over all the evidence." ????!!!! Not to mention that AG Cooper should be grateful for the opportunity Nifong provided him to even review the case.
Only after he gets through his agenda does he bother to apologize. In my line of work we use the word Narcissistic very carefully, but the rages (i.e. in the courthouse), the blindness to others, the specialness he feels both at his "luncheon" and even now after mowed down by the AG only offer further evidence this is a man with HUGE Narcisstic tendencies. BTW, good therapy for NPD doesn't exist.
Make no mistake, that apology was drafted by Nifong to toot his own horn. (No one else will!) The apology is simply an after thought or a convneient reason to get a word in edgewise.
Clearly, calling the Duke liar a 'victim' is PANDERING to the African-American community.
When will someone teach the values of reflexivity? That is, to expect to be held to the same standards you expect of others? If this woman were white and the three lacrosse players black, like in the Kobe Bryant case, we wouldn't see the word 'victim' for her.
If this woman is so mentally unstable that she has for the third time falsely accused someone of sexual assault or rape, then she needs to be off the streets where she can do no further harm to anyone else or even to herself.
