Katherine Harris Watch
Florida U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris is expected to make a big announcement tomorrow regarding her campaign for the U.S. Senate against popular incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Speculation is that she will announce her withdrawal.
Her campaign is reeling from disappointing fundraising efforts, being fifteen points behind her Democratic opponent before the primaries have even been held, and last week's allegations of illegal campaign contributions involving Abramoff clients.
The New York Times, the Tallahassee Democrat, and even the Washington Times all predict that she will be announcing her withdrawal. And there are lots of names being tossed around as her possible replacement, including Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
But you never know. As The Nation points out, "with Katharine Harris the watchword is always 'weird' so no one is sure what she will do until the deed is done." Some even speculate that the "big announcement" will be that she is resigning from the U.S. House of Representatives to devote full time to her Senate campaign.
That would certainly classify as "weird", but also perfectly in keeping with her "take no prisoners" style, which she so gracefully exhibited as Florida's Secretary of State (and the Bush campaign's Florida state coordinator) in the 2000 presidential election.
