Krewe du Vieux takes on Carnival
Th King of Krewe du Vieux this year is none other than Walter Williams, the creator of "Mr. Bill" of Saturday Night Live fame. Everyone agrees that Williams was the perfect choice, especially given his long-time environmental advocacy in the city (see his excellent documentary, "New Orleans: The Natural History").
To give you a taste of Krewe du Vieux's take on things, here's a prominent sign one of their floats this year:
FEMA Says Beads are On the WayGotta love it. For a complete overview of this year's Carnival and Mardi Gras, Gambit Weekly's famous parade critic Rex Duke has a good run-down.

Hey, Chris: I went to the link for the Walter Williams story in "Best of New Orleans". I noticed a banner ad at the top for FEMA. Thinking it was a parody, I clicked on it. Here's the first thing I saw:
FEMA Mobile Homes Stand Ready
FEMA mobile homes staged in Arkansas are habitable, available and properly maintained. They have not been damaged, and certainly none are being destroyed. Mobile homes are an important part of a comprehensive housing strategy, and are commonly used for temporary housing outside of floodplains. We had hoped for a better reception in the State of Louisiana, in particular, for mobile home parks to be located in those parishes outside floodplains, and we continue to await the needed authorities to move them in. We expect to use these mobile homes in other open or future disasters.
Thinking it was still some sort of "Onion-style" parody, I checked the URL. Yep. FEMA.GOV.
They've got to be kidding. Is that for real? Or an elaborate and masterfully executed hoax?
Oh, my.
