GOP rises to the defense of candy canes

According to Thomas, Rep. Davis (R-VA) introduced this last week. Here are the deliberations from yesterday:
Dec. 14, 2005 IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H. RES. 579 Expressing the sense of the House that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

Mrs. JO ANN DAVIS of Virginia submitted the following

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--
(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;
(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and
(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions.

**********************
Mr. ISRAEL. Madam Speaker, My difficulty with this resolution is that
it excludes some symbols and includes only certain symbols. So I would ask the gentlewoman, in the spirit of diversity, and of the many faiths that we celebrate in this body and throughout America, I would ask her not to withdraw the resolution, but allow this resolution to attract a very significant number of votes, maybe a unanimous vote, simply by adding the words "Kwanzaa,'' "Ramadan,'' and "Chanukah'' to her resolution. . . include holidays of all faiths so that this resolution can reflect the best of America, which is a place of justice for all.

Mrs. JO ANN DAVIS of Virginia. Madam Speaker, The reason for this
resolution is that the attack has not been on the menorah or any of the other symbols of the other religions. But the attack has been and is being made on red and green colors, on candy canes, on Santa Claus, which are not even religious symbols. That is the point of the resolution.
Read a news account here. I believe we're headed towards a McCarthy-era, "have you no shame?" moment soon.

This is almost as much of a waste of time for Congress as was the Clinton Impeachment.

If only those trying to protect the symbols of Christmas knew from whence they derive. Apart from the crib and the stable (neither of which are mentioned in the bible) the symbols of Christmas derive from the shamanistic traditions of those who indulged in the hallucinogenic mushroom amanita muscaria.

Santa, the "ho ho ho", the ruddy cheeks, the red, fur-trimmed robe and the entry via a chimney? All courtesy of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The fir tree with the star on top and the tinsel decorating it? All courtesy of hallucinogenic mushrooms (the tinsel represents the semen of a deity).

Reindeer that prance, fly, and sometimes have red noses? All courtesy of hallucinogenic mushrooms.

See this for the full story. And enjoy your glass of hallucinogenic reindeer urine...

My inquiry to the Hon Jo Ann Davis:
The Honarable Jo Ann Davis,
As an american living abroad, I have been following with interest the important issues in America today: the viscious attacks against Congresswoman Schmidt who had the courage to put down that false patriot Rep Murtha who dared challenge the policy of OUR PRESIDENT, the reasoned defense of Congressman Delay by OUR PRESIDENT against silly politically motivated charges of charges of conspiracy to launder money and money laundering, the anti-Americanism of those “Americans” who believe that OUR PRESIDENT should be impeached if he lied about the reasons for attacking Iraq, and the attempts by leftist senators to limit the power of the government to do whatever it wants to anyone without regard for the constitution or international law – but recently I have become particularly alarmed by attacks on Christmas. I plan to return to the United States to spend CHRISTMAS (not Kwanza, Ramada or Chanukah) with my sister and her family. I plan to do my best to support the American economy and the spirit of Christmas by buying them lots of gifts in the US, but, after reading your resolution, I am concerned that I may not be able to find candy canes when I return home. Should I buy candy canes here in Europe, thereby ensuring that we will have a Christmas filled with the symbols which are so important to that holiday – but thereby contributing to the economy of a country that is an enemy of the US (France) – or will I still be able to find candy canes for sale in the US? Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
Sincerely,

VA (and Paris France)

Brian de Ford - Santa Claus is derived from Saint Nicholas who has been celebrated as the patron saint of children and as a harbinger of Christmas in Europe for centuries.

The red Santa as you're familiar with is a product of Coca Cola way back when.

The Christmas tree stems from pre-Christian winter solstice celebrations in Europe, and already existed in ancient Rome.

The reindeer part stems from old Nordic traditions and tales, not necessarily shamanistic nor due to eating the amanita muscaria.

To anonymous from France - where do you intend to buy Christmas candy canes in Europe? I ask because we don't have such here in Europe, they are not part of our various Christmas traditions.

To Anonymous from France: When I heard Bill O'Rielly bravely tackle this subject, in particular the attacks on Red and Green, I began stockpiling Red and Green polyester leisure suits and more recently CandyCanes. I often find myself competing with small chlildren who do not understand the religioous significance of these Sweet Striped symbols. They are only concerned with eating them and making them dissappear and by doing so helping the leftists and the terrorists. I tune out their crying as I empty the last Candy Canes from the basket at the bank teller window or wherever I might find them. As a result I now have quite a stockpile that I would be willing to share with someone who promised to display them with the respect that they deserve. I can be contacted at O'Rielly@foxnews.com.

To earthling
Soon after Europeans adopted the use of Christmas trees, they began making special decorations for them. Food items predominated, with cookies and candy heavily represented. That is when straight, white sticks of sugar candy came into use at Christmas, probably during the seventeenth century.

Tradition has it that some of these candies were put to use in Cologne Cathedral about 1670 while restless youngsters were attending ceremonies around the living creche. To keep them quiet, the choirmaster persuaded craftsmen to make sticks of candy bent at the end to represent shepherds' crooks, then he passed them out to boys and girls who came to the cathedral.

Imagine my surprise to find a good progressive blog orginating in the South.

Born and raised in Alabama, coming of age in the 60's and cutting my political teeth on lying, corrupt politicians from both parties, I am an Independent (a family tradition, which continued to serve me well as I found out that the two major political parties were not entirely trustworthy).

Currently residing in Georgia, after years of traveling the planet and the counrty, living and working from coast to coast, including in San Francisco, I am again thinking of moving to Ca., for the simple reason that I am fed up with Diebold voting for me in Georgia and the Rethugs I have to receive patronizing mail from whenever I write to my elected officials, grouching about one thing or another; torture, spying on Americans, the mother of all war crimes and immoral budgets, year after year, etc. etc.

Now, I don't know about other areas of our sountern home, unto which we always seem to return, even though Thomas Wolfe told us that we could not, but I do know about Georgia and Kentucky, from a very recent visit to the sit-on-the-fence state (heavily Rethug, none the less), and I can vouch for the fact that there are Christmas trees, candy canes, evergreen garland with red bows, lights on the houses and in the windows and, even, a few silver bells.

Christmas music; hymns, carols and truly secular holiday music are playing everywhere between S.E. Georgia and Lexington.

Matter of fact, I was really getting into the Christmas spirit. But, after witnessing the above mentioned madness on the Hill yesterday, I have to admit that the Christmas Joy was gone by this morning.

All I want for Christmas is my damn country back, and if Santa is really feeling generous this year, how about giving back my religion as well!

"Bombing another Iraqi city, passing the candy canes and singing a verse of "Oh Holy Night" is not my idea of celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace!

These people, who are stirring up hatred and fear, with this "war on Christmas malarky" ought to be taken out back and horse-whipped, as my grandfather used to say.

I am beginning to think that atleast 33.3%, give or take, of this nation has gone totally bonkers.

I am another expatriot, living in the enemy camp contentedly. Maybe you would like to be a fly on the wall and understand French and be able to listen in to the attempts of the French and the rest of the world trying to uunderstand what is happening in America. This "War on Christmas" is another reason that America has become a laughing stock everywhere. The level of ignorance, gullibility and sheep like behavior of the country is pretty scary to watch, even at a safe distance.
Personally, I think that America has no idea what real Christmas candy can be! All that waxen flavorless pseudo chocolate. You have to have real chocolate. Even the versions authorized by the new EU regulations put any comercial chocolate sold in the USA to shame. America, It's time to stand up and throw away all that Whitman crapola. Wake UP America!!!!!!

In reference to the American Abroad: This is perhaps the reason that so many of our former European friends are getting disgusted with American Politics. He has all the earmarks of the dido-heads of the Bush Administration; attacking an ex-marine that served with valor, glorifying one had no idea who her fellows in congress are.

If you are referring to my letter to Jo Ann Davis, let me reassure you that my greatest "political" concern is not whether I will be able to buy candy canes in the US. You must not have read my letter all the way to the end. If you did, I hope that Jo Ann Davis understands irony better than you.
