The AP reports that the Minutemen, known for harassing Latino-looking people around the Mexican border, have expanded their mandate to urban settings in Alabama:
A citizens group calling itself the Alabama Minuteman Support Team has opened a new front in its war against illegal immigration -- Alabama's cities.This comes on the heels of news from next-door Mississippi that undocumented workers continue to do the bulk of post-hurricane rebuilding -- without getting paid:
Mike Vanderboegh, spokesman for the Alabama Minutemen, said the group will begin surveillance activities in the state this week.
Immigrants who are doing much of the grunt work in the clean-up after Hurricane Katrina are often finding themselves working for free -- but not by choice.
Thousands of Hispanic immigrant laborers are being stiffed in Mississippi. Sometimes their bosses disappear. Sometimes they are promised payment at a later date.
